What is straw aeration method? As the plants are in water for long will they not rot or will there not be growth of algae?

Hello sir, thank you very much for details on organic fertilizers used in hydroponics. I'm a beginner. I read about this straw aeration method when I was searching for simple set ups for beginners specially for my school children.

Is it a substitute for air tube used. If so how does it work? Can you suggest some other methods as simple school set ups?

As the plants are in water will there not be growth of algae? How can we avoid this?

Straw aeration is a means of manually aerating nutrient water in a hydroponics system by blowing air into the solution through a straw.

A simple system using this method can be found here. Other simple systems easily set up in a school classroom can be found here.

To answer your other question, hydroponics plants sitting in water will not rot as long as they sit in aerated water and they do not sit in the water above that dividing line on the plant stem at the base of the plant that separates the top plant from the root system.

And lastly, algae is merely an unsightly nuisance; it will not harm your plants one bit. I routinely have algae infestations in my systems because the nutrient water is exposed to light. Remove the light and the algae will not grow. If you look closely at the picture on my main website page you will notice the green water... I had an algae problem at the time I took the picture.
