Straw aeration is a means of manually aerating nutrient water in a hydroponics system by blowing air into the solution through a straw. A simple system using this method can be found <a href="http://www.kidsgardening.com/hydroponicsguide/hydro5-7.asp">here</a>. To answer your other question, hydroponics plants sitting in water will not rot as long as they sit in aerated water and they do not sit in the water above that dividing line on the plant stem at the base of the plant that separates the top plant from the root system. And lastly, algae is merely an unsightly nuisance; it will not harm your plants one bit. I routinely have algae infestations in my systems because the nutrient water is exposed to light. Remove the light and the algae will not grow. If you look closely at the picture on my main website page you will notice the green water... I had an algae problem at the time I took the picture.
