what is the length of time can the nutrients stay in the container or the time before you can drain the container? If you have a manual system what happen at night?

your information is helping me to go into hydroponics in a serious way.

Ebb/Flow Cycle
by: Larry

The ebb/flow cycle varies depending on humidity and density of the growing medium or substrate.

The key to healthy plants in a hydroponics system is to never let the growing medium dry out. The roots use the nutrient in the dampness on the growing medium after the systems drains.

So the first question is how long to flood a system?

Flood it long enough to saturate the growing medium and to provide at least one complete recycling of nutrient solution.

A water pump will push the water and nutrient into the container and growing medium which rises until it hits a preset level where it drains back into the nutrient solution container. I generally flood for 10 to 15 minutes.

The second question is how often to flood the system?

I usually flood every 2 hours or so during the day, more if the weather is hot and plants are in direct sunlight. Check the medium and do not let it dry out completely.

At night I flood every 3 or 4 hours although I could probably go the entire night without flooding.

As long as the substrate is damp and plants are not wilting you are fine.
