The pump issue.

I am building an aeroponic system, I know its not the same as your ebb and flow system but my question is this: Do I need a certain type of pump (aside from submersible) to run sprayers, or a drip?

I understand when I restrict the flow the gph will go down and will adjust for that. I have seen several types, i.e. mag-drive, resin filled, pond or waterfall. Any insight would be appreciated.

Aeroponics Pump
by: Larry

An aeroponics pump needs to deliver nutrient water in either a mist or a fog so must be high pressure, which unfortunately means more money.

First, either a sumbersible or external pump is just fine to use. The pump will force water under high pressure through a tube and out of a sprayer head to spray plant roots at timed intervals.

Of the 2 types, fogger and mist, a fogger system uses a high pressure pump and a low pressure sprayer while a misting system uses a hugh pressure spray head. As to which to use it is up to you. I have little experience with it myself although I do know that low pressure heads tend to clog fairly quickly.

This brings up the matter of placing your submersible pump, if you use one, into a fine mesh net bag to filter out anything that may clog your spray head.

As to what size pump to use it appears you need a degree in fluid mechanics to figure it out. Anything from small, high pressure pumps to sump pumps can be used successfully as long as they deliver at least 45 psi.

Good luck with the system!
