Startup costs for home hydroponics...

by Alan James

I am wondering, what are the costs associated with just getting started with home hydroponics? I would like to start growing some flowers that are not native to my area, but I am wondering what initial investment is required for a small-sized setup.

It all depends Alan on the type of hydroponics system you decide to build and if you plan to put it outside or inside.

My favorite is an ebb/flow system that runs a pump in a nutrient reservoir that is on a timer. Nutrient solution is pumped into the plant container and allowed to drain back into the reservoir.

Such a system would be on the expensive side when considering all the system types but could be built for under $50 USD.

In terms of equipment you'd need a pump (roughly 10 usd), a container to hold growing medium with plants and one to hold nutrient solution (10 usd) and some tubing with drain fittings (10 usd) and a timer to plug the pump into (maybe 15 usd). And, of course, don't forget the growing medium, nutrient and plants....

This estimate is high but will give you an idea what you are up against in terms of cost.
