Slimy, white coating in my hydroponic reservoirs

I am getting a slimy, white coating in my hydroponic reservoirs, including the ez clone system. It smells moldy/ musty. I've tried pythoff and flora shield with no luck. Any thoughts?

White, slimy coating in system
by: Larry

The white, slimy coating in your system would indicate some kind of infection. My first thought would be algae but you mention an 'ez clone' so I doubt any light can enter that system to help algae grow. If not algae, that pretty much leaves our choices as a viral or bacterial infection.

You say that pythoff and florashield were not effective...

Pythoff is basically a water conditioner with nutrient supplements so I cannot see how that would help. Florashield, however, will kill all bacteria including beneficial bacteria so if this did nothing then it is not bacterial so I would begin by cleaning the system.

Using a sponge scrub the system with a little bleach or hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of no more than a couple drops per couple gallons of water and rinse well.

When you see a problem like this, adding more and more remedies merely stresses your plants more. I always clean the system first and that seems to solve 90% of all problems.
