Science Project on Growing Medium

I'm doing a science project on hydroponics, seeing which medium grows the best plant. So I need to build a system that can hold the same type of plants with different mediums, that I can easily record the growth of, that' not too hard to make, and doesn't cost that much.

I looked over your site and was thinking the passive system, but wasn't sure. It would be very, very helpful if you could give me any suggestion to how to build one. I also need to know the easiest type of plant to grow in a system.

Thank you so much, and thank you for making this site. It has been a great resource!

Hydroponics Science Fair Project

You could grow like this next to an open window easily. And 'hydroponics' means growing plants without soil even if in clay balls or pea stone.

Also, one plant can be roots dangling into water with an air bubbler; a goldfish bowl or any good-sized glass container would work. You would just need something to support the plants as they grow.

That really helps with my homework load for this project. I had thought of that, but my question was whether that would be a hydroponics setting.

I know that it is without soil, but that setting seems to grow similar to it with soil. Although, I suppose, then you wouldn't need an oxygen bubbler in the tank. Could you grow them like this by setting it next to an open window?

Science Project on Growing Mediums
by: Larry

A science project comparing growing mediums sounds like a great idea! You mentioned 'passive hydroponics' but this lets the plants roots sit in aerated nutrient solution - no growing medium.

I would suggest a container system setup. Let's say you compare soil, pea stone, small fired clay balls as growing mediums. I would get a flower pot for each growing medium and fill that pot with it.

Place identical small plants in each pot containing each of the growing mediums. Water each pot manually using the same nutrient solution maybe 3 times a day and record the plant growth.

This type of system would be extremely cheap to setup. For plants I would suggest a small fast-growing vegetable such as string bean or pea.

I hope this helps...
