A Mittleider style raised bed organic garden
A raised bed organic garden in the Mittleider style is an excellant choice for an organic hydroponic garden. It is cheap to construct and maintain and will produce a large yield of vegetables - so large that you will be surprised. I would recommend that you pattern the design and technique to the
Montreal Project
which I consider to be a breakthrough study in the effectiveness of organic hydroponic gardening. Just construct a Mittleider growbox and fill it with a mixture of sand, perlite and vermiculite. This mixture will seem extremely 'light' meaning lacking density but will provide excellant drainage and aeration. In the Montreal Project this mixture allowed organic nutrient solution to easily reach all parts of the plant root system in the raised bed organic garden growboxes so root systems remained small allowing more energy to be directed to plant development. Plus, small root systems meant that grow boxes did not become root bound and could be used on rooftops. As for organic nutrient? Use the same as in the 'project'. Here is a recipe per gallon of water: - 1.5 teaspoons powdered fish emulsion
- 1.5 teaspoons liquid seaweed extract
- 1 tablespoon bloodmeal
Water the growbox once or twice per day and you will have a fully functioning organic garden that needs very little maintenance.
