Fertilizing Onions
by: Larry the Webmaster

Onions, when planted, require a large amount of nitrogen to produce top growth and roots. Then they settle down and too much nitrogen will cause thick necks to form, splitting and may even delay maturation of the onion bulb.

So for a dirt garden, apply a normal 10-10-10 fertilizer, plant the sets, then after 5 weeks sprinkle in 1/2 cup ammonium sulfate (without sulfur) per 100 feet of onion row. This adds in a large dose of pure nitrogen which will have been depleted as the onions first started to grow.

After this do not fertilize anymore and when harvesting the onions should be perfect!

If growing in a hydroponics garden, a general coverage hydroponics fertilizer can be used in the same dose through the whole onion growing season. Since hydroponics lends itself to transferring ALL of the nutrient to the plant it will get its needed nitrogen without having to fiddle with the dose...
