Growing Medium in an Ebb/Flow System
by: Larry, Webmaster

The growing medium for an ebb and flow system should be dense enough to anchor the plants, small enough to provide ample surface area to hold damp nutrients and porous enough to allow quick drainage.

My preferred medium for an ebb/flow garden is Hydroton which you can find in most hydroponics online stores. It is merely clay pellets fired in a kiln.

Buying a large bag of this is recommended. The shipping may cost more than the bag of hydroton but 'swallow' the cost and do it.

My next preferred medium is pea stone. It is relatively cheap, easy to find locally, is dense and otherwise a perfect growing medium. Its major drawback is the weight; small stones become extremely heavy even with small amounts.

Other mediums will work but in an ebb/flow garden you are probably pumping nutrient water into your garden at timed intervals and allowing it to drain back into the container.

This means that any growing medium capable of being carried away by the draining nutrient solution will clog the drain and the pump so will not work.

Stick with something dense and something porous.
