Leaves green but curled down

I have a NFT system or turbo tank and my humidity is 50% with my light on and 60% when the light is off. My nutrient in bloom is 2.6ppm cm, my room temp is 24 degrees and I also use root rot prevention. My water temp is 26 degrees but my leaves around the crown areas are green and curled down wards. I use bud link and oxyplus but some leaves are starting to go lightly yellow can you help.

High ph causing plant nutrient deficiency
by: Anonymous

No problem, Clint. You seem to have solved the problem without my help...I never even thought of ph.

High ph will inhibit a plant's uptake of water and dissolved nutrient causing a nutritional deficiency in the plants.

As to what kind of deficiency does not really matter in this case because you seem to have a balanced nutrient formula that will correct the deficiency once the ph is restored.

For informational purposes a nitrogen deficiency will cause yellowing of the leaves from the oldest leaves first at the bottom of the plant while an iron deficiency will cause leaf yellowing at the tips on the new growth.

Good luck with your system!

what do you think
by: clint

Thanks for that Larry, also I did a check on my ph it was too high around 7.5 to 8.0 so i am thinking that has a big thing to do with it.

I have adjusted the ph to 6.0, do you think that will solve a major part of the problem? As well I use optium solution as per rate on the back of the bottle to suit a 40L tank.

I will give them a flush as you suggested and give the oxy plus a break for a while to see if this will help but the ph level is a major factor in my problem do you think so and will they recover.

cheer's and thanks for the help

Possible plant nutrient deficiency
by: Larry, Webmaster

The symptoms you mention seem like a plant nutrient deficiency.

You mention using oxyplus which is mainly composed of hydrogen peroxide. This will bind with water introducing an extra oxygen atom for your plants to take in and it will kill all bacteria around your plant roots.

I have to say right off that I am not a fan of using hydrogen peroxide in nutrient water because it kills off essential bacteria. Bacteria seems to have become a 'bad word' in this day and age but plants depend on bacteria around their roots to help them resist disease and take in water and nutrients more efficiently.

Killing off all bacteria with hydrogen peroxide does not make much sense to me and, besides, it will get into the vegetables and affect their taste.

Since you have a NFT system, constantly moving water will introduce enough oxygen into the water to make the plants thrive without any additional help such as with oxyplus.

As for 'bud link' that seems to be a nutrient supplement and would not really be the cause of your problems from what I can see.

Yellowing leaves are a symptom of nitrogen deficiency and dark green leaves may point to a phosphorous deficiency.

So I am wondering what is in that nutrient solution you mention that is applied at 2.6 ppm. I am assuming it is a formula specifically made for hydroponics plants and is being applied in the proper amounts.

With that said I would first recommend that you completely change the nutrient water and thoroughly flush the plant roots with plain water to wash out any accumulated mineral salts.

This should help the plants regain some health.
