Finding Hydroponics Fertilizer Ingredients
by: Larry, Webmaster

If there are no hydroponics suppliers locally I would suggest searching on the Web; try stealthhydro.com or ecogrow.com which are just 2 of several sites I found.

I do not know the restrictions surrounding international imports and exports but I'm sure you could find a hydroponics supplier somewhere on the Web that can ship to you.

Or you could try organic fertilizer using bone meal, seaweed extract and fish emulsion mixed with water, all of which may be more easily obtainable. Look under the 'Plant Nutrients' tab of this website for more information.

Where to find Hydroponics Ingredients
by: Angel

Where can i buy dry hydroponics nutrients? Hydroponics nutrients are not available here in Qatar.

I can't find any single store selling hydroponics nutrients here; that's why I'm having a hard time establishing my hydroponic system. Please give me some information regarding dry hydro nutrients.

Plants for a hot, dry climate
by: Larry, Webmaster

More vegetables and herbs like sun than not so you have a large selection to choose from.

Since Qatar is a hot, dry climate here are a few vegetables that would do well...and there are many more: beans such as green beans and butter beans, eggplant, zucchini, okra, peppers (including hot peppers), pumpkins, potatoes, cucumbers and Asian green vegetables like bok choy.

As for herbs I would plant mint, basil, oregano, rosemary, lemon grass and cardamon just to name a few.

Assuming you will use a Mittleider grow box, you may wish to use a small diameter growing medium like pebbles or pea stone so you have much more surface area in which to keep wet with nutrient solution when you water than you would with large diameter stones or other growing medium.

You may also want to mulch the grow box - place hay or wood chips around the base of the plants to reduce evaporation and to keep the growing medium around the base of the plants cooler than in direct sun.

Hope this helps!

Any hydroponics system will work in a hot, dry climate
by: Larry, Webmaster

Hydroponics is well suited to hot, dry climates; drip systems have reclaimed large desert areas, Mittleider boxes have been started in India and attempts at aquaponics to grow vegetables and edible fish such as Tilapia are being built.

In New Mexico, USA I lived in the desert and successfully gardened with a drip system supplemented with nutrient water.

An NFT system, ebb/flow or passive system that require reservoirs of nutrient solution will work but will require more maintenance due to evaporation...

My recommendation for an outdoor hydroponic system in Qatar would be a Mittleider grow box which is a hybrid hydroponic/dirt garden. It's main advantage is that a grow box can be set outside anywhere....even on a rock if you wish. Check out the 'Mittleider Design' tab for more information.
