Clear Jars for Hydroponics
by: Larry

Using clear jars for hydroponics should be fine. The actual light on the roots should not hurt the roots unless it heats up the water around the roots to dangerous temperatures.

Sunlight will also encourage the growth of algae which turns your water into a thick green pea soup texture. Although dramatic, algae is harmless.

And bacteria and fungus will grow much faster in water exposed to sunlight. You want and need certain types of bacteria around the plant roots but other types can be deadly to your plants.

So roots dangling in nutrient solution exposed to light will work and the only things to watch for are the effects of the light on the nutrient solution.
