How strong are hydroponic systems?

by Alan James

I live in an area with a lot of wind storms. I am wondering, how are these systems able to hold up to the elements? I would be concerned about investing a lot of money and then having something wrecked.

Thanks for your site, it's a great resource!

How strong are hydroponic systems

Hey Alan, since you refer to windstorms you must mean outdoor systems and most outdoor systems are under cover whether in a gazebo type structure or a greenhouse.

So to stand up to wind, it's not the strength of the hydroponics so much as the strength of the structure surrounding the system.

My ebb/flow systems, pictured on my home page are in a homemade greenhouse. I built it of pvc piping, plastic zip ties and 6 mil painter's drop cloth (plastic).

It has stood up to short bursts of hurricane force winds, snowstorms dropping 3 inches of wet snow on it and thunderstorms with torrential downpours. I attribute this strength to the relatively thick plastic shell (6 mil) and the pvc construction that forms curved ribs just like the ribs on a covered wagon in old-west movies.

Of course if you build a gazebo type structure, wind will probably lift it like a kite and send it twirling away...

So it all depends on the structure type and materials...I'd suggest picking a design for a structure and/or hydroponics system, build it and test it out for a season...
