How often to Flush Hydroponic tank

How often should a 35 gallon tank be changed rather than just adding water? And would it be good to run plain ph-adjusted water for a day to flush out salt build-up in between tank changes?

Changing Hydroponics Water
by: Larry

I have an ebb/flow system with a 9 gallon nutrient container feeding 12 plants and I completely change the water every 2 weeks.

I change the water for 3 reasons: 1) to flush accumulate mineral salts, 2) to get neutral pH water in the system - the existing water has probably turned acidic, and 3) to replenish nutrients that have most likely been used up.

How often to do this? There is no set rule but the frequency that I do it works. Depending on the number and size of plants you have being fed by the nutrient solution, figure 11 medium sized plants and 1 large plant will need refreshing every 2 weeks. You can judge your own system with this information.

As for flushing accumulated mineral salts, I top-water the system with about 1 gallon of fresh water to flush accumulated salts back into the nutrient reservoir then I change the water. It takes me maybe 5 minutes to do this - no need to flush the system with fresh water for an entire day.
