How often should the hydroponic plants be watered?

Perhaps I've just overlooked it - but I'm not finding any reference or guidelines on how often you should have your pump flush the water thru the plants and how long should the water be left in the reservoir? I've been told 3 x hour and someone else said 4 x hour. No specifics how long it should soak.

Reuse hydroponic water for 2 weeks
by: Larry, Webmaster

As for how long to reuse the same water in the reservoir...I change it every 2 weeks or so. It all depends on the growing medium you pump it through. If you use small stones then minerals will wash out and eventually make the solution too acidic or alkaline and if you need to 'top up' the water each day due to evaporation you will be diluting nutrients. So if I grow my plants in pebble stone and it is a dry climate I'd change the water every 2 weeks but if I grew my plants in glass marbles in a humid environment I could go as long as 1 month between changes...to be sure use litmus paper to check the pH balance of the water. If it is not neutral then change it.

For how often to run the water through it all depends...in humid weather I run it 10 to 15 minutes once every hour and for dry weather maybe 10 minutes twice an hour. Set a rate you think is good and watch your plants for a few hours. If they start to droop then increase the water flow to them...remember that there are systems where plant roots are always submerged in water so as long as the roots have adequate oxygen the plant will not drown meaning that more water flow is better than less water flow. As long as your growing medium is always damp and does not dry out between water flow you will be fine.
