Nutrient Solution in a Hydroponics System
by: Larry

The nutrient solution in a hydroponics system, and you are probably referring to an ebb and flow system, reaches the plant roots because the growing medium is not packed around the roots.

This is the beauty of hydroponics, the ability to use virtually anything as a growing medium as long as it is not too dense and does not leach off any toxic elements.

In the ebb and flow system a pump raises the water level in the container holding the growing medium and plants to a specific level then drains back down to be reused.

The only reason growing medium is used at all is to give the plant something to anchor itself to so it can stand upright without the use of some elaborate system of supports.

So just think of an ebb and flow system pumping water up and around plant roots so they can feed - growing medium does not provide any barrier to water flow and really does not need to be there at all.
