Rain Gutter NFT
by: Larry

I can see how root growth would be a problem in a rain gutter NFT design - in fact, it's a problem in almost any system.

My ebb/flow system is designed with plants sitting in 16 oz plastic cups with holes tapped into it and root growth is a problem. Once a week I trim the roots around the outside of the plastic cup.

Have you tried trimming the roots in the rain gutter system?

so sorry.....
by: Anonymous

i am so sorry to tell u this it seems to be a good thought and all...but....i did a rain gutter system 10 yrs ago..it works ...but think of root growth...it will fill the gutter with roots and it will over flow...the only way to stop it is to put anouther gutter on the top of tat one and drill 3" holes in it..put net pots in the holes ... the roots will block the gutter,i know....its a mess....

Vertical NFT System
by: Larry

Vertical NFT systems are becoming extremely popular. An NFT or nutrient film technique hydroponics system is what people envision when they think 'hydroponics'.

I'm currently working on my own NFT design but I can point you to a youtube video on how to make a good vertical nft system.

This is an excellent video which should give you some ideas for nft design.

The video constructs an NFT system using house gutter pipe but neglects to mention that aluminum cannot be used...it will quickly corrode from the mineral salts.

The frame he constructs will also double as a means of plant support and determining the strength of a pump, called the pump 'head', is better covered in the pump section of this website.

Also the builder in the video goes to great lengths to discourage the growth of algae including covering the tops of the gutters. This is not necessary; algae does turn water green but is harmless - just replace your nutrient water to get rid of it if you need to.
