Dutch Bucket Problem

by Janice Broda

I have a dutch bucket system for growing cucumbers and tomatoes. The grow medium is leca and coir mix. Sometimes the buckets fill up with water, so do not drain. I suspect the grow medium clogs the drain fittings. Does anyone have a remedy for this? Thank you.

Clogging in a Dutch Bucket
by: Larry

Clogging in a Dutch Bucket seems to be fairly common. Any hydroponics system using a growing medium that can pack down around a drain will eventually clog it.

When I use pea stone I usually surround the drain with larger stones to help leave a space around the drain to prevent clogging but coir is so small and light it will still settle around the drains.

I would not personally use coir as a growing medium because it will clog drains easily. So I do not really have an answer for you other than to eliminate the coir and stick with the Leca clay balls.

The Leca will definitely not cause a clog. Anyone else have any experience with this?
