Does standing water vs a pump extract too many minerals?

If I do not have the money nor power supply for a pump, is a hydroponic system still an option; I've heard that although plants eventually grow roots in just standing water, they are depleting their own nutrients to do so. How should I get around this? Will simply adding ammonium sulfate mixture work?

Mineral depletion in passive hydroponics systems
by: Larry the Webmaster

Growing plants in standing water should not present a problem.

I'm assuming that you will mix some hydroponic nutrient into the water then float the plants in the nutrient solution. The nutrient will have all the minerals required by the plants so there is no need to add ammonium sulfate which is really adding nitrogen.

So...mix hydroponics fertilizer in a vat of water, float your plants in it and you are all set provided you change the water every 2 weeks adding in new hydroponics fertilizer because minerals will get depleted, water pH will change, etc.

A small aquarium air bubbler placed in the solution would aerate your water but occasionally scooping out a potful of nutrient water and pouring it back in will also aerate the water sufficiently.
