Simple math
by: JonnyB

Let us simplyfy the math.
Lets pretend it is a 500W lamp - that makes easy figuring. This lamp would use .5 KWH ( kilowatt hours/hour )
Every two hours you consume 1 KWH. I pay 11 cents per KWH , , , so 11 cents every 2 hours. Five and a half penny per hour.
a twelve hour day = 66 pennies per day
X 30 days = $19.8
400watts is 80 % of 500W soooo,, , ,
$19.80 X .8 = 15.84 /month

Pumps use the same math - just smaller numbers.
Many pumps are 5 Watt. I love Metric - just move the decimal. 5 watts is only one percent of 500W.

1% of $19.80 /month = $1.98/month
24 hours/day = $3.96/ month

Substitute your rate of delivered electricity

Grow Light cost
by: Larry

I really do not know how much a grow light would cost in Australia in terms of electicity usage.

However I can tell you that flourescent lighting would use the least amount of power with high wattage grow lights using the most power.

The best way to go, in my opinion, would be a combination of natural light with flourescent lighting. Keep the flourescent lights close to the leaves and try using some reflective medium around the plants to keep a higher intensity of light on them. Simple aluminum foil works well for this.
