Can sulphur be used to control scum in nutrient water?

This spring will be my first attempt at hydroponic gardening, your site is very helpful. What about a pinch of fine sulphur to control scum?, and would the 2 liter bottle system work better for tomatoes?

Use Sulphur to control scum
by: Larry, Webmaster

Remember, Jim, that sulphur is a trace element that plants need and use. The hydroponic nutrient that I use is composed of 2% sulphur so it seems to me that a pinch just may be toxic for the plant so I wouldn't do it. Besides, getting rid of scum is only for aesthetic purpose and does not benefit the plant.

Plants need a good colony of bacteria around their roots to help them fight disease and to help take in water, and scum just may be a byproduct of this bacteria. If the scum really bothers you then I would change the nutrient water, not add sulphur.

As for using 2 liter bottles for tomatoes...theoretically it would work just fine. But in reality such a large plant would merely tip over in such a small container. You could use them if you had some means to support the plant...
