Can I use tap water in my hydroponics system? If I let it sit for a day, won't the chlorine evaporate?

Use tap water in hydroponics?
by: Larry

You can safely use tap water in hydroponics systems if you know it is chlorinated and you let it sit for 24 hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate.

And don't forget to adjust the pH of the water to neutral. Tap water that travels through an extensive system of underground pipes will almost always have a pH that is out-of-balance.

There is one problem...not all public water supplies are chlorinated; many are treated with chloramine instead of chlorine.

Chlorine has a strong, distinctive smell and successfully keeps bacterial levels down but it is extremely unstable and will dissipate after 24 hours or so.

This has proven rather costly to the public water services so a money saving alternative was developed called chloramine.

Chloramine is basically chlorine with a touch of ammonia added to stabilize the chlorine. Chloramine will not dissipate on its own and must be removed.

Yes, many of us are drinking water laced with ammonia...almost scary to contemplate.

Fortunately there are products available to remove chloramine from water. Check in the section selling aquarium supplies.
